The evolution and ecology of sleep

The lab

The lab is based in the Biomedical Sciences Building located in the University of Bristol's main campus, close to the vibrant city centre. We are a stones throw away from the beautiful Royal Fort Gardens (where we like to eat lunch in the summer), multiple food outlets and Durdham downs with stunning views of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The lab consists of a main behavioural space (F10), a 3D printing workshop (G15) and a shared wet lab space (F30). There are several well equipped communal labs and two floors down, the excellent Wolfson Bioimaging Facility (with cryo-EM, live cell imaging and fluorescent microscopy) where we do our confocal microscopy. The lab has close ties with the School of Biological Sciences: we have an ongoing collaboration, and frequently use the micro-CT scanning facility in the Palaeontology department. In the School of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, we are part of a thriving Drosophila neurobiology community and are currently developing communal lab spaces to foster more collaborations between the DasGupta, Hodge and Boto labs as well as other Drosophila groups in other schools.
In the lab we use state-of-the-art techniques including sleep tracking, deprivation and arousal probing with ethoscopes, micro-CT scanning, fluorescent microscopy, CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis and are dabbling in structural biology (alphafold). We largely work on Drosophila species but also have projects relating to sleep in butterflies and parasitic wasps.
The school welcomes numerous guest speakers as part of the Snapshot seminar series and Bristol Neuroscience. List of upcoming everts are listed here:
